A wreath, in memory of the 22 sailors killed in action on-board the Devonport based Type 21 frigate HMS ARDENT during the 1982 Falklands Conflict, has been laid today at the Plymouth Hoe Falklands memorial.
On 21 May 1982, whilst lying in Falkland Sound and supporting Operation Sutton by bombarding the Argentine airstrip at Goose Green, ARDENT was attacked by at least three waves of Argentine aircraft. The air strikes resulted in the sinking of ARDENT the next day and the loss of 22 members from the 199 crew who later abandoned ship onto the frigate HMS YARMOUTH.
The wreath laying was attended by survivors of HMS ARDENT as well as family and friends of the fallen who make up the HMS Ardent Association. This was a first for the Assocation as they had not been in Plymouth together on the 21st May and been able to attend the annual wreath laying service together on such a large scale before.
